Mémoires. 1984-1987 (2010)
In 1973, Seiichi Furuya left Japan for Europe, eventually settling in Graz, Austria, where he met Christine Gössler in 1978. Their life together became an ongoing photographic dialogue, capturing domestic moments with their newborn son to journeys across England, Italy, and Japan. Christine, an art historian turned actor, later focused on theater but struggled with schizophrenia, tragically taking her own life in East Berlin in 1985. Furuya’s Mémoires. series (1989–2010) serves as a reflective and healing reconstruction of these memories. The fifth volume, Mémoires. 1984–1987, revisits their time in East Germany through 253 photographs—102 black-and-white and 151 in color—accompanied by Christine’s writings and Einar Schleef’s essay Schwarz Rot Gold. This poignant collection traces the family’s move to Dresden in 1984, Christine’s passing a year later, and Furuya’s return to Graz in 1987.
